Quilts N Fabrics is nestled in the foothills of the Uintah Mountains, located at 3106 N 18750 W in Mountain Home, a small farming and oil field community in northeastern Utah. Established in June 2015, the shop offers a stunning view of the “Upper Country” in the Boneta-Altamont area. Owned by Deb and Allen Lindsay, the shop is Deb’s passion project. While Allen’s involvement is limited to offering support and occasionally moving heavy cases of fabric, Deb is truly in her element when she’s in her shop.
Quilts N Fabrics came to life through a serendipitous series of events. Fifteen years before its opening, Deb had given up sewing altogether, parting with her machine, tools, and fabric after the loss of her sewing partner. But one day, her daughter convinced her to take a quilting class. Deb bought a new sewing machine, fabric, and tools to participate. During this process, she realized the local fabric options were of poor quality. Determined to find better materials, Deb contacted Moda Fabrics and opened an account.
Initially, Deb set up shop in part of her husband’s new building, gradually expanding to take over the upstairs and part of the downstairs. At first, she sold fabric exclusively online. Then, one day, the local quilt guild heard rumors of a quilt shop in the Altamont area and called to ask if they could visit. Deb said yes, but there was one problem—her inventory was stored upstairs, far from visitor-friendly.
In a panic, Deb called her friend Dana, who arrived with a group of high school boys to help. Within three hours, the boys moved all the inventory and shelving downstairs, and Deb and Dana spent the rest of the day organizing. When they were finished, Deb stood back and exclaimed, “Wow! I have a complete quilt shop and didn’t even know it.”
Today, Quilts N Fabrics is celebrated as the “Best little quilt shop in Utah,” a place where Deb’s love for quilting shines through in every corner.
Deb Lindsay’s Quilting Journey
Deb Lindsay is an artist at heart and by trade, with a deep love for many forms of art. Quilting, however, is her true passion. It’s not just a hobby for her—it’s her joy. Beyond quilting, Deb enjoys glass blowing, wood carving, bronze sculpting, oil painting, and various types of needlework.
Her mind is always buzzing with new ideas. For instance, she designed and patented a batting bin specifically for her longarm quilting machine. She also has a special fondness for her Singer Featherweight sewing machines, which she loves repairing and servicing herself.
Growing up, Deb spent hours in her dad’s workshop. He was a welder who often worked on engines, and Deb was right there beside him, happily covered in grease up to her elbows. That experience sparked a lifelong love for hands-on work with machinery. Today, she can often be found sewing on her beloved vintage machines. Though she has top-of-the-line modern sewing equipment, they sit in storage—she prefers her classic models.
In 2018, Deb discovered Judy Niemeyer’s paper-piecing method through a video and immediately wanted to try it herself. She ordered a pattern and began following along. Her first attempt hit a few snags, and without formal instruction, she set the unfinished quilt aside. Five years later, inspired by another video tutorial from Judy, Deb tried again. This time, she completed the quilt and was hooked. She even returned to her first attempt and finished it, learning from her earlier mistakes. Deb has finally achieved her goal of becoming a Quiltworx certified shop.
